When I was a relatively young Christian, my company was involved in the construction of an indoor swimming pool in the state of Oregon. Several times a month I would drive from my offices in Seattle to inspect the progress on the swimming pool construction project. On each trip I would drive by a brightly painted Sauna Parlor with an erect male penis painted on the side of the building. The Sauna Parlor, which was named “Pleasure Palace Sauna Parlor” didn’t leave much to the imagination concerning the type of services that were available inside. As a relatively new Christian my spirit was grieved by the way the Sauna Parlor was openly flaunting sin.

In my home in Seattle, I was leading a Bible Study Group of ten young Christians who were studying the Bible by reviewing Christian teaching books. At the time we were studying using Kenneth E. Hagin’s book entitled, “The Authority of the Believer” (this book is currently called “The Believers’ Authority”). The evening before this incident, the class had just finished studying the words that Jesus was teaching His disciples in John 14:12-14;
“Most assuredly I say to you, he who believes in me, the works that I do; he will do also; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to My Father. And whatsoever you ask in My name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in my name, I will do it.”
Hagin pointed out in his book that the Greek word translated “ask” can also mean “demand”. An example of the use of the name in this manner can be seen at the gate called Beautiful when Peter demonstrated this use of the name to the lame man sitting at the gate. “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk”. (Acts 3:6) Peter demanded that the lame man walk. Peter was not demanding anything of the Father. It wasn’t God who had the lame man bound; it was the devil. He was demanding that the devil give way to the name of Jesus.

Having just completed the chapter dealing with the believers’ authority over the devil the previous evening, when I saw the Pleasure Palace Sauna Parlor that morning a boldness came upon me and I said, “I bind every foul spirit that would cause men to come into this sauna parlor and prosper it.” Instantly I had a vision of a large, ugly, angry, hairy being looking at me from outside the windshield of my car. That ‘ugly’ being said, in an angry, authoritative voice “I will get you for that”… I can never remember experiencing anything like this either before or since, that time. I laughed at the devil’s attempt to intimidate me, and responded, “No you are not, I am a son of God”, and continued to drive toward the construction project.

About 15-20 minutes later my car backfired several times and the engine stopped. I was able to pull off the highway and park the car. I looked at the gas gauge, which was low and assumed that I had run out of gas. I walked about a quarter of a mile down the road and got a couple of gallons of gas, and returned to the car. After pouring the gas into the cars tank I tried to start the car. The car backfired and wouldn’t start even after adding the gas. I walked back to the station again, and this time I had the mechanic from the station go with me to the vehicle. When we arrived, one of my tires was also flat. When the station attendant tried to start the car it backfired and the air cleaner caught on fire. We put the fire out and had the car towed to the garage for repair, and I rented a car to complete my trip.

Later in the week the garage found that the car had lost its timing. I traded the car, which was only two years old, for a new car.

In our next meeting of the Bible Study class, I reported my experience to the men and women in the study group. Having never experienced anything like this before I wasn’t entirely sure what to think of the whole experience.

At our Tuesday, May 2nd Bible Study meeting, which was about six weeks after the incident near the Sauna Parlor, Terry Brown and one of the men who was attending the Bible class on the Authority of the Believer, brought a friend of his by the name of Jack who was visiting from the Portland area. Jack who had heard of my experience at the Sauna Parlor from Terry, had with him a newspaper article from the “Portland Oregonian Newspaper” which stated that the Pleasure Palace Sauna parlor located near the Portland Airport had been investigated by the County Police Department. The article also stated that the owners of the “Pleasure Palace Sauna Parlor” had reported to the Police that they had closed the property because “it had not been a profitable operation”.
